The foundation for your quit

Every longterm quit is built on what happens in the first few days and months of a quit.

Having fear that something in the future will make you trip will usually result in just that.

During your first couple of weeks, having an expectation of victory going in will help build a solid foundation for a longterm quit.

Using positive self-talk every chance you get in the first few weeks will keep you focused and on track to reach your first month, three months, six months, and beyond.

You can actually talk your way into victory by using positive affirmations. Phrases that express your confidence and your determination will get you past sneaky urges to return to your old way of life.

Here are some examples of things you can and should repeat to yourself over and over and over: "I'm a nonsmoker, I love breathing fresh air, I love smelling good, I love tasting food, I love setting a positive example for my children, I'm proud of myself for saying 'No!'" Again and again and again.

Keep telling yourself, "I'm a nonsmoker for life!"


Setting your quit date

There are several things to get done before you set your Quit Date. The better prepared you are means your journey will be familiar, safe and compelling.

__ I've learned as much as possible about how to quit and I believe I'm ready to quit.

__ I understand the stages of change and I believe I'm ready to quit.

__ I believe in the importance of Positive Self-Talk and have written my own affirmations.

__ I've visited my doctor and am following prescription advice. (If you've opted).

When you believe you are ready to quit smoking your next step is to set the date for the big day.


What to do

On the day you quit plan to spend as much time as possible with nonsmoking friends who want to see you succeed. Visit places all day long where smoking is not allowed. Stay active, and finally, concentrate on what you're starting instead of what you're ending.

Stay positive even when you don't feel like it. Every time you resist an urge to light a cigarette you become stronger and the cravings begin to get weaker.
